Trainee Patent Attorney Position
We seek to recruit a Trainee Patent Attorney required for our Littlehampton-based firm for an immediate start in view of our increased caseload of mechanical subject matter. Therefore, a background in mechanical or engineering is preferred, but a technical background in physics, electronics or computing would also be considered. A degree in one of these disciplines is a prerequisite for this position.
We act for local, national and international clients and, through our associates, we protect and enforce IP all over the world. Contentious matters represent a speciality of ours; we have particular expertise before the Opposition Divisions and Appeal Boards of the European Patent Office and have acted before the UK IPO, the UK courts and trade mark tribunals in the UK and at EUIPO.
Training and support will be provided as required with the aim of achieving qualification as a Chartered UK Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney. Training in other areas e.g. trade marks and designs can be considered at the request of the successful candidate.
Excellence in training in terms of vocational work and in preparation for professional exams are a focus for our firm. Training in concert with the work of qualified attorneys, the tutorials that we run in-house, our monthly professional update meetings and our teamwork are all aspects of our being a cohesive unit of professionals. Training extends across the whole firm; it’s not just an attorney focus but applies to all. The regime has won us awards for staff training from the local business associations.
The duties associated with the role of trainee patent attorney will principally comprise (but are not limited to):
- Interacting with clients, associates and suppliers of our firm in providing patent services such as those given above.
- Liaising with and cooperating with other attorneys and support staff in the firm.
- Liaising with and reporting to company managers.
Suitable candidates will be expected to demonstrate good interpersonal skills, excellent attention to detail, strong oral and written communication and an ability to work to tight deadlines.
We are only able to consider applicants who are eligible to work in the UK. It would be a preference for the candidate to hold a full UK driving licence.
Working hours are Monday – Friday, 09:00 to 17:00. The successful candidate will be required to spend some days working from home in view of the current COVID restrictions; for this the company will provide any equipment required. Post COVID the job will be located in the Littlehampton premises, not least because we consider this a prerequisite for effective training. Salary will be in line with qualifications and industry norms.
Applications with a CV and a brief covering letter, including two references, should be sent marked “Private and Confidential” to Keira Denton, Schlich Limited, 9 St Catherine’s Road, Littlehampton, BN17 5HS or via email to email@example.com. Applications must be received by 5 January 2021.
